Never mind, I figured it out!

In case this is helpful for anyone else. This was the error message I was getting: “The FOL function is not enabled.”

If you hold F1 when the laptop is booting up and enter the BIOS menu, under Config -> Network, Enable the Flash option.

Then repeat the steps to update your BIOs, and voila! Updated BIOS!

Well, I followed the instructions at that link and it did not work unfortunately.

I also found this link that warns it might brick my laptop, and that it is basically impossible even if I were to get access to the battery leads:

As a mental note, I have BIOS version ITET48WW.

I found this which someone else had luck updating the bios on a ibm Thinkpad 600 model without the battery.

Dude, that sucks.

Can you see the battery leads at all from the back? It’s a longshot, but maybe you can hook up a battery via wires to the leads?

Actually, from looking at the pictures again, I think you’re screwed.
